Phoenix by Ember Overal

A surface, open like a book, with two leaves extending from the centre upwards. The surface is covered in a gold fabric, and the fabric is then draped with thinner bits of orange and red organza, draped in a way to try and create the feeling of flames. On top of this are layed 4 pictures, alternating top and bottom of the suffice, and 2 pieces of paper with text, that is not legible in this picture. The photos are from left to right, a black and white photo of a mannequin in a dress, a desaturated picture of a white leg being shaved, a letter on fire, with the name of the person it was addressed too just being burnt, and a white woman, standing in a woodland clearing. This woman has long brown hair and is wearing a white floral dress, black corset and high heels.
Phoenix is a tetraptych for a project on the theme of authenticity.

The 4 pictures that make it up are:
01 – Strike The Match
02 – Fan The Flames
03 – Inferno
04 – [From The] Ashes

The photographer views transition as her rebirth in to her authentic self, born anew from the Embers of the shell.

The name for each picture in the series is taken from an issue of the x men comic inferno, and the photographer has used this as a jumping off point for understanding the journey, from understanding, to tentative first steps, to burning down the old name and, finally, becoming the authentic self.

Photos 1-3 taken by Ember Overal, photo 4 taken by Becki Baldwin.
