In true Queer fashion, we decided to create our own terminology for Queer Creatives. Biscuits are essentially a unit, or a course of work. They last for different lengths of time, depending on the subject, and the input from the members of the group.
Here are all our biscuits to date (listed from most recent). Click on the titles of each for more details:
B6: Snapshots in Time
- The largest biscuit to date! We started to consider representation and impact through photography, which took us back in time looking at work created before critical laws were passed in terms of freedom
- A key exercise asked members to submit a photo that was significant to them, whether it be a person or from an event
- This topic gave the group an opportunity to take their own photos, as well as a discussion hour about queerbaiting and asked; can we identify queerbaiting in photography?
- A study of queer photography over time
- Celebrating contemporary queer artists and the importance of collaboration between the subject and the photographer
- A recap of queer themes and how we can explore this through the lens
- The impact and function of bringing awareness through visual art
B5: Queering the Text
- This biscuit built on terminology covered such as queering, and applied it to literature
- As a group, we discussed what is ethical theatre practice, and how this is expended specifically when looking at queer texts
- The end project was split into two options; raisin and currant. One path challenged members to re-queer a ‘traditional text’ whilst the other focused on writing an original piece about queering/requeering
B4: Theirstry
- Split into two, this biscuit consisted of poetry and studying different performance styles that crossover into Postdramatic techniques
- Members had an opportunity to read and watch poems and spoken word about both unique and commonly felt within their life as a queer person
- The performances and poetry were focused on autobiographical themes, which was then added to an ongoing list of identified queer themes
B3: Trans History & Exploring Outside of the Gender Binary
- A large biscuit, with pathways available to choose from such as; UK trans history (monologues, notable mentions), Intersex representation (art and discussion), Non binary representation (discussion, allyship)
- Q&A with published author of “Yes, you are Trans Enough” Mia Violet
- An opportunity to produce your own piece of work relating to your chosen pathway, and discover various performances and artwork that is representative of their identity
B2: Coming Out/Letting In
- Engage in historical pieces of writing and definitions such as ‘closeted’
- Share and discuss your own/others coming out experiences in a safe space
- Respond to the questions; “What advice would you give to someone who is considering coming out” & “What might society look like if queerness was the norm and we lived outside of a heteronormative society”.
- Produce a spoken word piece based on what we have covered during this biscuit or your own research that contains thoughts, feelings and reactions
B1: An Introduction to Queer Theatre
- Exploring contemporary examples of queer theatre including themes, semiotics and impact on audiences
- Establish critical and personal understanding of the term queer, whilst reflecting on its etymology
- Engaging in theatre exercises such as Queering that reframe our understanding of performance
- Produce your own interpretation of a queer text from a selection chosen by the practitioner
